Thinking about changing your name as part of your divorce? About half of my clients choose to change their name as part of their divorce process. While most clients decide to go back to their maiden name, some of my clients have chosen an entirely new name to mark the new beginning in their life. A name change as part of a divorce is essentially a line item in the judgment and decree. A name change outside of a divorce process requires a motion, a court hearing, and witnesses. If you are thinking about changing your name after your divorce, it will be considerably easier to do it as part of your divorce.
Whether you change your name as part of a divorce, or at any other time, below is a checklist to help you remember all the places you need to notify.
